Apologies for the delay in sending out an update regarding the Powers Field Playground project. Since Mark’s last update sent on August 14th, the scope, complexity, and estimated cost of the project has increased considerably due to the Commonwealth’s regulations designed to make public spaces accessible and safe for people with disabilities.
According to MA law, an accessible route must be provided to each piece of play equipment and around the perimeter of the playground. The route must be “firm, stable, and slip resistant.”

Here’s a quick note to all of you interested in the progress toward reopening the Hingham Centre Playground.
Hingham resident and landscape architect Sean Papich has graciously donated an alternative plan to the one proposed by the Town. I’m attaching it for your review and comments. Sean’s plan more closely replicates the layout of the original equipment, moving it farther from School St. and keeping it nestled among the trees next to the cemetery fence. A quick update on the status of the Hingham Centre Playground project. It’s some time since I sent you the first email update and I suspect some of you are wondering what’s going on.
At the suggestion of a neighbor, Hingham landscape architect Sean Papich has agreed to take a look at the proposed plan and offer suggestions. He’s taken the project on on a pro-bono basis for which we thank him. He has visited the site with Michael Monteiro and me, offered some thoughts and has promised a draft of a plan, which we should have soon. Friends & Neighbors:
The ‘death’ of our little playground is something I’m sure we all expected to happen at some point, but it was still a surprise. The Town had no option after being given a highly critical report by an outside evaluator. I was terrifically impressed with just how quickly the Selectmen’s office responded with a plan, but the financing is on us. This playground holds deep and enduring memories for me, my children and now my grandchildren. I’ve already made my contribution to the gift fund, I hope you’ll join me. |
